What is LLLT?
Low Level Laser Therapy or LLLT is a kind of laser light energy treatment used in physical therapy that uses Low-level (Low-Power) lasers or light-emitting diodes to alter cellular function. In other words: The technology activates the aging and dying cells to increase their effectiveness in hair growth and controlling hair loss.
Mechanism of LLLT in treating hair loss
The hair cycle is divided in 3 stages. Once the cycle is complete, it restarts and new strands of hair begin to form. Evidence has also suggested that, LLLT may alter cell metabolism through increased ATP (Adenosine TriPhosphate-ATP transports chemical energy within cells for metabolism) production, modulation of reactive oxygen species, and induction of transcription factors. These transcription factors in return cause protein synthesis that triggers further effects down-stream, such as increased cell proliferation and migration, alteration in the levels of cytokines, growth factors and inflammatory mediators, and increased tissue oxygenation.
In laymen’s language; the light energy from LLLT entices the new hair follicle in Telogen phase that eventually increases the rate of proliferation of hair follicles in active Anagen phase.
How to identify the right laser machine that provides LLLT technology for home and clinical use
Since the LLLT technology received US FDA clearance, there are many players in the market that offer infra-red light devices, that makes it quite difficult to diffrenttiate pure laser diodes from the cheaper Infra-red devices. To deal with this information assymetry, one must ask/see for 2 things: Diodes are generally brighter and uncomfotable to look at directly and a good laser machine will be supported with clinical trials.
